COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TO IMPROVE SAFETY IN THOHOYANDOU

Today, 16 May 2025, marked a significant step towards creating a safer community in Thohoyandou. In a bid to curb the escalating violence in Limpopo, community leaders, churches, police, and government officials joined forces in a packed community engagement session.

The meeting, led by Director General of the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service (CSPS), Mr. Thulani Sibuyi, Head of the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, Mr. Stephen Matjena and Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, aimed to address the alarming rates of murder, robbery, and sexual offenses plaguing the area.

The session provided a platform for citizens to voice their concerns and suggestions on how to tackle violence. The meeting was complemented by the rollout of the “Case Closed” campaign on the sidelines. This campaign aims to provide feedback and closure on police cases, ensuring claimants are informed about the status of their cases.

The CSPS has undertaken to coordinate, through the Provincial Secretariat for Police Service in the Department of Transport and Community Safety, the efforts of all government departments and stakeholders required to address the issues and areas highlighted by community members.

This engagement marks a crucial step towards building trust and ensuring that the needs and concerns of the community are heard and addressed.

“The community plays an important role in the fight against crime,” says HOD Mr. Stephen Matjena, as he facilitated the community engagement session. And SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. T. Hadebe says, “We’re ready to resolve and fight against crime, and the community must work hand in hand with police officers. We’ll also make sure to support the victims of crime, and police should treat people with dignity and respect.”
