ZERO TOLERANCE, ZERO VICTIMS – LIMPOPO’S ROAD‑SAFETY MISSION
The Limpopo Provincial Traffic Officers, together with other law‑enforcement agencies, concluded a decisive Phuza Weekend Operation from Friday 14 November to Sunday 16 November 2025, resulting in the arrest of 26 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol across the province. The highest blood‑alcohol reading recorded was 1.07 mg/100 ml, taken from a driver apprehended in the Vhembe District, a stark reminder that even a single drink can push a motorist beyond the legal limit and dramatically impair judgment, reaction time and coordination.
In accepting the official custodian-handover report and the newly launched Limpopo Road Safety Strategy (LRSS) 2026‑2035 and the accompanying Limpopo Road Safety Action Plan (LRSAP) today in Polokwane, MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye, committed the Department to continue working with all relevant stakeholders to transition into the next steps – the implementation of the action plan. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” she said, “and alone the department will not be able to achieve Vision Zero.”
The strategy, commissioned by the Anglo‑American Foundation and drafted by Impact Catalyst, envisions a future with no deaths or serious injuries on Limpopo’s roads. The Phuza Weekend crackdown is a tangible step toward that vision, sending an unequivocal message that drunk driving will not be tolerated.
We call on every motorist to make the responsible choice: plan ahead, use a designated driver, or rely on public transport or ride‑share services when alcohol is involved. By keeping our roads free of impaired drivers, we protect our families, our neighbours and ourselves. Let us unite in this commitment – because every kilometre travelled sober is a step closer to achieving Vision Zero for Limpopo. Drive responsibly; the lives you save may be your own.
