As Limpopo Province prepares for the Easter weekend, the Department of Transport and Community Safety is urging all road users to prioritize safety on the roads. MEC Violet Mathye has emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility, with the theme “It Begins With Me” serving as a reminder to all drivers, passengers, and pedestrians to take ownership of their actions on the roads.
Last year’s Easter period was marked by a significant reduction in road fatalities, with no major crashes on the N1 and not a single fatality. This achievement is attributed to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, motorists, and the public. “We are not complacent, and this year, our operations will intensify under Operation Malayisha,” MEC Mathye warned.
The province will focus on key routes, including the N1, N11, R81, R71, D4040, R36, R523, and R524, with increased patrols and weighbridge checks to combat overloading and reckless driving. “The days of overloading vehicles over long distances must come to an end,” MEC Mathye emphasized.
In a show of commitment to road safety, 24 new law enforcement vehicles were unveiled, with 16 allocated to the Department and 12 to Mogalakwena Municipality. “Road safety is the responsibility of each and every one of us,” MEC Mathye said. “Let us commit to making everyday a day without road fatalities.”
Motorists are urged to plan their trips in advance, buckle up, and take regular rest breaks. Pedestrians are reminded to remain visible at all times when walking along or crossing roads. The message is clear: Drive safely and arrive alive this Easter.
