MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, led a high-impact roadblock and stakeholder engagement in Phalaborwa on Wednesday, 08 July 2026, as Service Delivery Week rolled out across Mopani District.
The programme commenced at the Lulekani/Phalaborwa T-junction on the R71, where a multi-disciplinary roadblock operation was conducted. The operation comprised officials from Provincial Traffic, Municipal Traffic, the Public Transport Unit, and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
During the operation, 82 warrants were executed and 6 vehicles were impounded, including 2 minibuses and 4 Toyota Avanzas for various violations. A total of 10 summonses were issued for offences including driving without a license, overloading, number plate violations, Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) violations, expired license discs, unroadworthy vehicles, and crossing a no-overtaking line. Motorists also received road safety education with a strong focus on seat belt use and compliance.
Following the roadblock, MEC Mathye engaged scholar transport operators, small taxi operators, and public transport stakeholder organisations at Namakgale Town Hall in the Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality. The information-sharing session focused on the implementation of the National Land Transport Amendment Act, Act 23 of 2023, with emphasis on licensing requirements and the correct vehicle categories prescribed by the Act.
The engagement reflected the Department’s commitment to strengthening public transport through stakeholder collaboration, regulatory compliance, and improved road safety.
With these activities already underway, Service Delivery Week continues across Mopani District and will run until the end of the week, with MEC Mathye forming part of the government monitoring team at various ongoing projects in the district.
“Through visible enforcement, education and direct dialogue, the Department remains dedicated to building a safer, more reliable and compliant public transport system for the people of Limpopo,” emphasised MEC Mathye during the engagement session.
